IDENTITY & DISCURSIVE PROGRESS

Wanqiao Li. "Identity & Discursive Progress". BISPSY 350: Intergroup relations. Spring 2024
"Identity & Discursive Progress" explores the intricate relationship between identity formation and discourse. It introduces key concepts from social psychology and discourse analysis to illustrate how language shapes group identities and maintains power dynamics.

The presentation also provides concrete examples of these concepts in action. For instance, it discusses how figures like Hitler and Howard employed rhetoric to promote discriminatory policies without being explicitly racist. Hitler depicted Jews as threats to the German community, using terms like "parasites" to justify discriminatory actions. Similarly, Howard framed issues around fairness and equality while advocating for policies that reduced Indigenous land rights, positioning the debate as a dispute between communities rather than an act of discrimination.

I chose this paper for my portfolio because it highlights my research skills. This is a group project, which I chose because it not only demonstrated that I could demonstrate my individual talents in a group but also allowed me to examine language and intergroup relations from an academic point of view.
